Jailed Vietnamese Dissident’s Life Can Be ‘Counted in Days and Hours’

Manila, Philippines — The United States government has, for the first time, publicly rejected the legality of China’s “Nine-Dash Line” claim in the South China Sea.
 
During his testimony before Congress last week, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel stated that under international law, maritime claims in the South China Sea must be derived from land features.

With 18 journalists behind bars, Vietnam ranks fifth in the world for imprisoning members of the press.

Iran, China and Vietnam top the list, with five adopted prisoners each. But lawmakers have also been willing to confront U.S. allies: McGovern and Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) have adopted prisoners from Bahrain. Others have adopted prisoners in India and Pakistan.

Activists chanted anti-China slogans and laid flowers Sunday at a protest in Hanoi marking the 40th anniversary of the Chinese invasion of contested islands in the South China Sea.
